After the battle, Thorin searched the battlefield for his father's body, checking every single Dwarf corpse he could find and didn't find his father. Thorin managed to rally the Dwarves and lead them against the leaderless Orcs, winning the day at great cost. Azog's minions came to his aide, dragging him back into the mines, Thorin believing the Defiler to have died of his wounds. The Pale Orc fell in pain, blood spurting everywhere.

He then managed to find his sword with his hand and as Azog attempted another swing, Thorin chopped off his arm at the elbow. Azog prepared to kill the young Dwarf Prince but Thorin picked up the only thing he could reach, an oaken branch, which he used to shield Azog's attack. Thorin was knocked over by Azog's sheer strength behind a swing of his mace and lost his weapon. Thorin finally confronted Azog, who was ready to take out the entire Line of Durin in one swift blow.

While Thráin was captured by Azog, Thorin was told by the other Dwarves that he had fallen. Thráin stopped Thorin from facing Azog and led a charge towards the Dimril Gate himself to face the Pale Orc. Thorin couldn't reach Thrór due to the distance between them but watched in horror as his grandfather was beheaded by Azog and the Pale Orc threw the severed head away, rolling past the young Dwarf Prince. Thorin fought bravely against the Orcs and watched in fear as Azog faced off his grandfather in battle. Thorin was present when Thranduil arrived to deal with the Dwarves and witnessed his father withhold the White Gems of Lasgalen from the Elven-king. Thorin became good friends with Balin and Dwalin, the sons of Fundin while in Erebor. Thorin believed his grandfather was driven mad by the massive amounts of Gold, Mithril and treasure the dwarves were collecting in the mountain but continued to serve under his authority.
